Many business startups in Tanzania fail due to a lack of genuine entrepreneurial passion from the founders, inadequate market research, and poor planning, according to business development expert from TAPBDS, Mr. Malega W. Kalembire in a recent interview on Azam Media, while highlighting critical factors that often determine whether a new business will succeed or collapse.

Mr. Malega says, an entrepreneur’s internal drive plays a significant role in their ability to withstand challenges. “Someone who starts a business out of passion is more likely to persist during tough times than someone who was merely convinced by others to venture into business,” he explained.

He also pointed out that many startups do not conduct proper market research before launching their businesses. “It is important to understand what market needs the business intends to meet, the problem it will solve, and the competitive environment,” he noted.

Additionally, many entrepreneurs struggle with sourcing raw materials due inadequate understanding of the value chain within which they operate, leading to supply shortages which consequently affect business operations. “Not knowing where to buy materials, seasonality and related costs can cause serious disruptions,” he added.

Another major issue is the lack of a solid business plan. Mr. Malega emphasized that some entrepreneurs start businesses without a clear roadmap, making it difficult to sustain operations. “Without proper planning, entrepreneurs run their businesses blindly, which often leads to failure,” he stated.

His insights is a wake-up call to subscribe on the “Corporate Strategy Workshop” by TAPBDS in Zanzibar from April 28rd – 30th, 2025, aimed at equipping business leaders, executives, and decision-makers with the tools to navigate complexity, ensure long-term sustainability, and position their businesses for lasting success.
