TAPBDS and AGRA's Comprehensive Projects for Sustainable Growth

2017- 2023

Welcome to an overview of the impactful agricultural projects implemented by TAPBDS in collaboration with the Alliance for Green Revolution in Africa (AGRA). Post-Harvest Loss Management Project – Mechanization

July 2020- March 2021

The Project aimed at increasing uptake of Post-Harvest loss reducing technologies in Tanzania. Among others, TAPBDS carried out following Business Development activities:
1. Identifying and training 30 MSMEs (including 10 women-owned) on threshing business management.
2. Mobilizing 30 MSMEs to contribute US$ 96,000 as cost sharing on purchase of threshing machines.
3. Facilitating purchase and acquisition of 30 threshing (60% cost covered by AGRA and 40% covered by a service provider-MSMEs).
4. Digitizing service order processes: mobilizing and linking 100,000 farmers to threshing service providers through the establishment of threshing hubs.
5. Mobilizing 2 financial institutions to develop financial products that are suitable for the threshing businesses and associated post-harvest services

PiATA TIJA (Partnership for Inclusive Agricultural Transformation in Africa)

2017 – 2021

This was the AGRA intervention under PIATA program aimed at spearheading agriculture transformations through developing seed systems, structured market systems and improving the capacity of agribusiness to manage the associated risks. TAPBDS role was to train SMEs and Producer groups to improve their business capacity, ability to negotiate and contract, market expansion plans and engage into partnerships in the established sub-consortia. Partners were supported to access markets and financing for their expansion. A total of 47,020 farmers trained, 259 enterprises were trained, 354 new jobs created, 6 financial service providers engaged, 172 producer groups capacitated and US$ 542,898.21 accessed from FSPs as loans.

SMEs Consortium scale up project

August 2022 – January 2023

Sustaining and Scaling Consortia Operation by Expanding the Operational and Investment Capacity of Agri-SMEs in Tanzania - This was shortened to SMEs scale up project; the AGRA initiative carried out in August 2022-2023 in Tanzania. The primary objective was to scale and support sustenance of Agribusiness transactions between Agri-SMEs and suppliers in a market pull approach. TAPBDS 'role was to strengthen enterprises' capacity to improve their formal market systems and access finance. A total of 120 SMEs tracked and diagnosed their production and purchasing capacity, 30 were registered into digital platforms, 80 businesses trained on strategies to expand markets and access to finance, 20 linked to banks for financing and 22 supported to develop capacity on standards compliance for domestic and regional markets and SMEs accessed US$ 792,795.65 loans from banks.

Tanzania Accelerated Delivery initiative (AID-I) Project

January 2023- On going

AID-I aims to improve food security for 1 million households in Tanzania by 2024. In 2023, it focused on reaching 250,000 smallholder farmers in the Southern Highlands. Working with business consortiums, Agri-food SMEs, and local governments, the project enhances market linkages and supports sustainable farming, inclusive business, seed systems, and policy development. Activities include promoting innovation, increasing productivity, improving market mechanisms, and extending services through VBA networks. Women and youth are key participants, and digitization and access to finance are promoted in rural areas. AID-I's goals include boosting crop production, improving seed and fertilizer use, strengthening local markets, and enhancing farmer resilience. TAPBDS is leading MONI consortium encompassing Morogoro, Njombe and Iringa.
